Q: Should I be pre-stretching natural gut string? Poly strings? A: Pre-stretching tennis strings is generally a personal preference and a general practice for natural gut strings. I have however seen this also being used for multifilament strings and polyester strings. When you prestretch string you take out some of the elasticity and the strings will feel somewhat stiffer when installed. Some customers will ask to have the string prestretched and it might be a good practice to ask customers who are using natural gut. Some computerized stringing machines have a 'prestretch' option on the machine but you will most likely need to 'prestretch' by hand. When using the machine, it basically double pulls each string and I consider this slightly different than true 'prestretching'. More on this in another post.
